The Purbeck Marathon and The Purbeck 16 are wonderful races where almost 700 runners will be testing their strength and endurance running through some of the most beautiful scenery in the UK. Finishing either of these events will be a tremendous achievement. However, it is not all about the runners. The events cannot take place without the work of many others who give their time to create something special that Purbeck and Dorset can be proud of.

A committee works all year round on the event to prepare for September’s races and to build on the success of the previous year’s race. On the day they are aided by many more volunteers who are essential to the safe and efficient staging of The Purbeck Marathon. Without this dedication these great races cannot take place.

Marshals are required around the course to guide runners, be a contact for safety and, very importantly, provide much needed encouragement for tired bodies. More volunteers are required to enable the smooth operation of the start and finish including hanging medals around necks, looking after the baggage tent, dispensing drinks and handing out goody bags.

In a new development for 2015, on the day volunteers will have a direct say in how funds are distributed to good causes. One of the founding objectives of The Purbeck Marathon is to distribute surplus funds to local charities and good causes. In 2014, The Purbeck Marathon was able to donate £6,000, an increase of 50% over the previous year. For 2015, volunteers will be able to nominate a charity to receive a donation from The Purbeck Marathon.

“The Purbeck Marathon is passionate about presenting Purbeck in its best light to those who have travelled to this stunning part of the country. Our volunteers have played a major part in this with runners noting their helpfulness and friendliness. This has been a major factor keeping The Purbeck Marathon rated as one of the best races in the UK. This year volunteers will have a direct say in how funds are distributed to charities and good causes after the event.”

We welcome partners who would like to become involved in this unique event. We are pleased to announce that Corfe Castle company Blue Level Media has joined with us to work on an updated Web site. We are looking forwards to working closely with them. PURBECK! JOURNAL has also joined us recently as an official partner and we are looking forward to working with them to help present the best of Purbeck.

The organisers have announced that entries for the 2015 Purbeck Marathon on 20 September are already half full with details available at www.thepurbeckmarathon.co.uk. Entries are also open for The Purbeck 16 which also takes place on 20 September 2015.

This marathon is a community event, put on by (extremely tired!) volunteers in order to share our favourite runs with you and to raise much needed funds for local charities and good causes. In 2014, we were able to donate £6,000 to these causes, a 50% increase on 2013. If you would like to become involved, please contact info@thepurbeckmarathon.co.uk.
